How to build a habit that sticks, without signing up for anything
Most habits don't fail on day one. They fail on the first busy day, when there's no plan and no reminder. Here's a simple method that works with a paper calendar, your iPhone's Reminders app or a habit tracker, and none of it needs an account.
Habit Tracker: Jetrise has no account and no sign-up. Pro adds unlimited habits, stats, reminders and badges
Build it step by step
- Start smaller than you think. Pick one habit and make it easy enough to do on a bad day: two minutes of reading, one glass of water, a ten-minute walk. Grow it once it feels automatic.
- Tie it to something you already do. Attach the new habit to a routine you never skip: after morning coffee, read one page; after brushing your teeth, floss. The old routine becomes the cue.
- Choose a schedule you can keep. Daily isn't always realistic. Weekdays only, or three set days a week, is fine as long as you decide in advance which days count.
- Get a reminder at the right moment. On iPhone, open Reminders, create a reminder, turn on a time and set Repeat to daily, weekdays or custom days. Pick the moment you would actually do the habit, not just the start of the day.
- Track it and keep the streak. Mark each day you do it, on a calendar or in an app. A visible run of days is motivating, and over a few weeks it shows which days you tend to skip.
When you miss a day
Missing once is normal. What matters is getting back to it the next time it is due. A useful rule is to never miss twice in a row. If you keep slipping, make the habit smaller or move it to a better time instead of relying on willpower.
Breaking a bad habit
For habits you want to stop, count the days since your last slip instead of ticking boxes. Make the habit harder to start, for example by moving an app off your home screen or keeping snacks out of sight, and decide what you will do instead in that moment.
Paper, Reminders or an app?
A wall calendar costs nothing and you see it every day. iPhone Reminders gives you the nudge, but it doesn't show a streak or your history. A habit tracker puts the two together: today's checklist, your streak and a calendar of past days.
Whatever you choose, it doesn't need to know who you are. Building a reading habit shouldn't require an email address.
Why use Habit Tracker
- One-tap check-off. Today shows only the habits due today, grouped by morning, afternoon and evening.
- Streaks that follow your schedule. Streaks count the days a habit is scheduled, and today stays open until you check it off, so an unfinished morning does not break your run.
- Calendar heatmap. See every day's progress at a glance.
- Ready-made or your own. Start from more than 20 suggested habits for health, mind, productivity and wellness, or create your own.
- Yes/no, count or time. Track done or not done, a number like glasses of water, or minutes like reading time.
- Quit bad habits. A days-since counter for habits you want to stop. Tap to log a slip and start again.
- No account. No sign-up. Your habits stay on your iPhone.
- Pro. Unlimited habits (up to 3 without Pro), stats and trends, a daily reminder for each habit at the time you choose, and streak badges.
Questions
Do I need an account to track habits?
No. Habit Tracker: Jetrise has no account and no sign-up, and your habits are stored on your iPhone.
How many habits should I start with?
One, or two at most. Add another once the first one happens without much thought.
Does missing a day reset my streak?
In Habit Tracker, a streak counts the scheduled days you completed in a row, so missing a scheduled day starts it again. Days that are not on the habit's schedule don't count against you.
Can I get a reminder for each habit?
Yes, with Pro you can set a daily reminder for each habit at the time you choose. Without Pro, a repeating reminder in the iPhone Reminders app works too.
